How to prepare for an upcoming Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)
Important Test Instructions:
- Arrive 30 minutes prior to your test to allow time for registration
- Allow at least 45 minutes to one hour for testing
Important Test Instructions:
- Refrain from smoking at least 6 hours before your appointment
- Avoid eating a heavy meal at least 1-2 hours before your test
- Wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid breathing restrictions
- Do not take medications that affect lung function
- Stop these inhaled medications 24 hours before testing
- Advair (Serevent and Flovent)
- Severent (Salmeterol)
- Dulera (Azmanex and Foradil)
- Symbicort (Pulmicort and Foradil)
- Foradil (Formoterol)
- Brovana (Arfomoterol)
- Spiriva (Tiotropium)
- Stop these inhaled medications 6 hours before your appointment:
- Atrovent (Ipratropium Bromide)
- Combivent (Albuterol)
- Duoneb (Albuterol and Ipatropium)
- Stop these inhaled medications at least 4 hours before your appointment:
- Proventil HFA
- Ventolin HFA
- Maxair (Pirbuterol)
- Proair (any form of Albuterol or albuterol sulfate)
- Alupent
- Xopenex (Levalbuterol)
